POLICY DEVELOPMENT
Policy development supports changes in environmental conditions and policy implementation drives campaign strategies and plans. Change can take many forms: from limited voluntarily policies within businesses that commit to alter the way they operate; to updated regulations revised to fit the contemporary environment; to implementation of new laws.
However, before new laws or regulations are proposed, a thorough analysis of existing community policies and potential improvements is conducted. As part of this process, feedback is obtained from key stakeholders such as representatives from law enforcement, community leaders and public officials who have knowledge of local problems and the history of dealing with them. Research on model policies that have been used successfully in other regions is also conducted and policy solutions are matched up with results of local needs assessments to ensure they have the potential to address issues of concern.
Once sample policies are drafted, they are submitted, with support of local partners, to elected officials who have been identified through community organizing efforts as potential supporters. Such policies are also highlighted in media advocacy-related activities to help build general public support for their approval and implementation.
